\u201cBy confirming these sentences Saudi Arabia\u2019s authorities have displayed their ruthless commitment to the use of the death penalty as a weapon to crush dissent and neutralize political opponents,\u201d said Amnesty\u2019s director of campaigns for the Middle-East, SamahHadid, on Monday.<\/p>\n
The 14 individuals were convicted over charges of \u201carmed rebellion against the ruler\u201d by, among other things, \u201cparticipating in shooting at security personnel, security vehicles,” \u201cpreparing and using Molotov Cocktail bombs,” \u201ctheft and armed robbery\u201d and \u201cinciting chaos, organizing and participating in riots.”<\/p>\n
Some 66 people have been executed in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the year, 26 of whom were killed over the past few weeks. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Earlier in the month, Amnesty stressed that Saudi Arabia is using the death penalty as a means to silence Shia dissent.<\/p>\n
