Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi, aged about 40, is also the first Islamic extremist charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the first person to face a solo allegation of cultural destruction.<\/p>\n
The attacks on the ancient shrines triggered a global outcry, and archaeologists hope the trial will send a stern warning that such plundering of our common heritage will not go unpunished.<\/p>\n
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first crime committed by Wahhabi groups, the radical groups destroyed many Muslim holy places, such the holy shrines of Baqi in Medina, Shia Muslims around the world mark the demolishing day of Baqi in the name of The International Baqi Day.<\/p>\n
