Argentina: Investigation Exposes Disinformation Campaigns Linking Muslims to Terrorism, Illegal Immigration

——————————————–

A journalistic investigation by Argentina-based fact-checking platform Chequeado has exposed disinformation campaigns targeting Muslims in the country, involving misleading claims that associate them with terrorism, crime and irregular immigration. The findings come amid the growing circulation of anti-Muslim content across social media platforms.

The investigation, published on January 13, 2026, found that these campaigns gained momentum in late December 2025. They included allegations of a large influx of Muslim immigrants into Argentina, accusations of criminal activity, and claims that Muslim communities were threatening Christian religious traditions and symbols.

According to Chequeado, available official statistics do not support claims of a significant and sustained increase in immigration from Muslim-majority countries. The investigation also found no credible evidence substantiating the criminal accusations circulated against Muslims.

The report documented the use of old videos and footage taken out of context to mislead audiences. In one example, video footage filmed in Egypt was falsely presented as having been recorded in Argentina, in an apparent attempt to reinforce misleading narratives about the presence and activities of Muslims in the country.

The investigation also highlighted the role of certain media accounts and political figures in spreading these allegations, including accounts associated with right-wing media outlets and supporters of the libertarian political movement.

In addition, the report examined disinformation campaigns targeting Muslim American politician Zohran Mamdani following his victory in the New York City mayoral election in November 2025. These campaigns included unsubstantiated allegations linking him to terrorist organizations, as well as fabricated statements claiming that he intended to make Islam the official religion.

Chequeado warned that the spread of such false information contributes to reinforcing negative stereotypes about Muslims and fuels religious hostility and discrimination against minority communities.

The investigation further emphasized that anti-Muslim disinformation campaigns are not confined to national borders. Misleading videos and fabricated reports are frequently recirculated across different countries to exploit public concerns surrounding immigration, religious identity and cultural change.
