Muslim, Arab-American Candidates Make Historic Gains in 2026 US Midterm Elections Amid Rising Political Influence and Anti-Muslim Attacks

————————————————————

Muslim and Arab-American candidates have secured significant victories in the 2026 US midterm elections, marking a notable expansion of their representation in American politics.

In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed secured a historic victory in the US Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the chamber. His campaign focused on economic inequality, healthcare, campaign finance reform and opposition to US military aid to Israel and the war against Iran. His candidacy also faced attacks targeting his Muslim identity, with Republican opponents repeatedly attempting to associate him with extremism without presenting supporting evidence.

In Minnesota, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar won a fifth consecutive term representing the state’s Fifth Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger John Nagel. Her victory came amid growing tensions with the Trump administration, following a federal investigation that included an October raid on her Washington, DC, residence and the seizure of electronic devices and her passport.

Meanwhile, in New York, Aber Kawas made history by becoming the first hijab-wearing Palestinian-American woman elected to the New York State Legislature. Her victory also places her among a small number of Palestinian Americans elected to state-level office across the United States. Campaigning under the slogan “Fund Dignity, Fight Destruction,” Kawas emphasized affordable housing, universal healthcare, public transportation, immigrant rights, climate protection and opposition to funding wars.

The results reflect several factors behind the growing success of Muslim and Arab-American candidates, including stronger political organization among immigrant communities, the ability to connect domestic economic concerns with foreign policy issues, and the formation of broader alliances with progressive activists, younger voters and social justice organizations. Their campaigns increasingly extended beyond religious and ethnic representation to address healthcare, employment, housing affordability, immigration and opposition to military intervention.

At the same time, attacks on Muslim candidates and attempts to question their political loyalty have become a prominent feature of the electoral environment.
