New Zealand Astrophotographer Captures 1,400 Satellites Over Mount Taranaki to Reveal Growing Space Pollution

——————————————————

A photograph showing thousands of satellite trails across the night sky above Mount Taranaki in New Zealand has drawn widespread attention to the growing problem of space pollution, after its creator rejected claims that the image was artificially generated using artificial intelligence.

New Zealand astrophotographer Brendan Larsen explained that the image was produced through an extensive photography and editing process. During September, he captured 578 photographs over two hours, using eight-second exposures, before spending approximately 40 hours combining the images in Adobe Photoshop.

The final composite shows around 1,400 satellites, leaving approximately 14,000 visible trails across the sky above Mount Taranaki. Shared on social media in October, the photograph quickly attracted millions of interactions. Larsen also published a video documenting the photographic process to demonstrate that the image was genuine.

The photograph has renewed discussions about space pollution and the growing number of objects orbiting Earth. According to the report, approximately 16,000 active satellites are currently operating in Earth’s orbit, alongside large quantities of space debris.

Experts have warned that increasing satellite activity could affect astronomical observations and potentially contribute to environmental concerns related to atmospheric changes.

Larsen said he hopes the photograph will raise public awareness about the growing congestion in Earth’s orbit and encourage more responsible use of space resources.
