Ireland sentences three extremists for plotting firebomb attack on Galway mosque

——————————————-

An Irish Special Criminal Court has sentenced three men linked to an extremist group to prison terms for plotting a terrorist attack against Maryam Mosque in Galway, Ireland, in what authorities classified as an aggravated hate-motivated offence.

The court, presided over by Judge Caroline Biggs, sentenced the main defendant, Garrett Pollock, to 10 years and six months in prison, with the final year suspended. His two accomplices, Darren Gorman and Karolis Pikauskas, each received eight-year sentences, with the final year also suspended.

The sentences followed the defendants’ admissions of involvement in a plot to attack Maryam Mosque, located on Monivea Road in Galway, using an incendiary device on November 4 and 5 last year. Pollock also admitted possessing flammable materials and components intended for the construction of a firebomb, which were discovered by security authorities during the investigation.

Investigations revealed cooperation between Irish police and the Police Service of Northern Ireland to track the activities of a group calling itself the “Irish Defence Army”, which was suspected of planning the attack. During the trial, Irish police stated that the evidence indicated the attack was imminent and that authorities had recovered a document outlining the group’s intention to target the mosque.
