A study by the Mediendienst Integration research center has highlighted the limited access to Islamic religious education in German schools, despite the country having at least 780,000 Muslim students. Around 84,300 students attended Islamic religious education or Islamic studies classes in seven German states during the 2025–2026 academic year, nearly double the 42,600 recorded a decade earlier.

The study attributed the limited participation to a shortage of qualified teachers, insufficient educational programs and teaching materials, and limited awareness among some families. It also found that no such programs are available in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Thuringia and Brandenburg.
