Muslim Leadership in Bangsamoro: Abdulraof Macacua’s Reported Election Awaits Official Confirmation

—————————————

Abdulraof Macacua, a prominent Muslim leader and former commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), has reportedly been elected to lead the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), marking a potentially significant moment in the region’s pursuit of Muslim self-governance and political stability.

According to reports, Macacua secured 51 votes against 27 for his rival during a parliamentary session in Cotabato attended by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The reported vote would place a veteran of the Bangsamoro struggle for autonomy at the head of the region’s government. However, the election details and voting figures have not yet been independently confirmed by official parliamentary or government sources.

Bangsamoro’s autonomous government emerged from the 2014 peace agreement between the Philippine government and the MILF. The region was formally inaugurated in 2019 following a plebiscite, establishing a framework for self-governance for its predominantly Muslim population after decades of conflict. The leadership transition is part of the broader effort to strengthen the region’s political institutions and advance its autonomous governance.
