Russian City of Saratov to Mark 190th Anniversary of Its Grand Mosque with Cultural, Historical Events

———————————-

The Russian city of Saratov is preparing to commemorate the 190th anniversary of its Grand Mosque with a series of cultural and historical events scheduled for November 8, 2026. The program will include documentary film screenings and an exhibition of historical photographs, documents, and artifacts highlighting the mosque’s history and its role in preserving the Islamic identity of the local Muslim community.

The events will take place as part of Russia’s Year of the Unity of Peoples celebrations. Organizers plan to present rare archival footage and historical materials documenting the mosque’s development and religious and cultural significance across generations. The main event is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on November 8 at the Grand Mosque, located at 10/12 Tatarskaya Street in Saratov. A chess festival for children and young people is also planned for November 21.

The mosque’s history dates back to the 19th century, when a large stone mosque was built on Tatarskaya Street in 1832. The building was known for its prominent minaret and Islamic architectural design. According to historical information cited by researcher Dr. Nidal Ahmad, the mosque was confiscated during the Soviet period, when its minaret and surrounding wall were demolished. The building was subsequently used for other purposes, resulting in the loss of much of its original Islamic character.

The Muslim community regained the building in 1991. However, its deteriorating structural condition led to a decision to rebuild it. Construction began in 1995, and the new mosque was officially inaugurated on September 21, 2005.

Today, Saratov’s Grand Mosque serves as an important religious, cultural, and social center for the region’s Muslims. Its Islamic Center complex houses the local religious administration and the Sheikh Said Islamic School, while hosting educational, religious outreach, and humanitarian activities.

The center also serves as a meeting place for community organizations and public figures and welcomes delegations and visitors interested in the history of Islam in Russia’s Volga River region.

The upcoming commemorations aim to preserve the mosque’s historical memory and introduce younger generations to its founding, the challenges it faced, and its eventual restoration.
