Ja‘far al-Tayyar: Great Martyr of Islam Remembered for His Sacrifice and Faith

——————————————————————

Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib, known as Ja‘far al-Tayyar and Dhul-Janahayn (the Possessor of Two Wings), is one of the most revered figures in early Islamic history and holds a distinguished place in Shia tradition. He was the son of Abu Talib, peace be upon him, and the elder brother of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Divine peace and blessings upon him.

Ja‘far was among the early Muslims and became known for his courage in defending the faith. When persecution intensified in Mecca, he led a group of Muslims who migrated to Abyssinia, where they sought protection under its Christian ruler, the Negus. According to traditional accounts, Ja‘far spoke on behalf of the Muslim migrants, explaining their beliefs and reciting verses from Surah Maryam about Prophet Jesus and Mary. His account helped convey the message of Islam to the Negus and defend the migrants against efforts to have them returned to Mecca.

His most celebrated moment came at the Battle of Mu’tah in 8 AH (629 CE), where he carried the Muslim army’s standard. Islamic historical accounts state that after the commander Zayd ibn Harithah was killed, Ja‘far took up the standard and continued fighting despite severe injuries. He was martyred in the battle.

In Islamic tradition, Ja‘far became known as al-Tayyar (“the one who flies”) and Dhul-Janahayn (“the possessor of two wings”). Narrations explain these titles by stating that God granted him two wings with which to fly in Paradise after his hands were severed in battle. His story is remembered as a symbol of sacrifice and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming danger.

Ja‘far’s family also occupies an important place in Muslim history. He was married to Asma bint Umays, and their children included Abdullah, Muhammad and Awn. After Ja‘far’s martyrdom, the Prophet is reported to have instructed people to prepare food for his family, who had been struck by grief—a tradition often cited in discussions of communal support for bereaved families.
