Reports Warn of Worsening Hunger in Africa as Humanitarian Food Aid Falls 59%

——————————-

International reports have warned of worsening hunger and food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa, citing armed conflicts, climate-related disasters and a sharp decline in humanitarian funding.

The Global Hunger Index report found that sub-Saharan Africa accounts for seven of the eight countries facing alarming hunger levels and is home to the world’s three largest acute food insecurity crises. Globally, hunger levels have deteriorated in 32 countries, while 20 others have made only limited progress.

According to Action Against Hunger, around 266 million people across 47 countries and territories experienced high levels of acute food insecurity in 2025, with two-thirds concentrated in just 10 countries. Conflict remains the primary driver, displacing communities, destroying livelihoods and disrupting agriculture, while droughts, floods and rising food prices further intensify the crisis.

The organization also reported that humanitarian food assistance funding for crisis-hit areas fell by 59% between 2022 and 2025, forcing aid programs to scale back as needs continued to grow.

Meanwhile, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that approximately 645 million people experienced chronic hunger worldwide in 2025. This figure measures a different form of food insecurity from acute hunger, explaining the variation between global estimates.
