Egyptian news website Youm7 has published a report examining the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon them), the grandson of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family). The report highlights the event’s lasting impact on Islamic history and Muslim religious memory, placing the tragedy on the 10th of Muharram 61 AH, corresponding to 680 CE.

Drawing on historical accounts, including Ibn Kathir’s Al-Bidaya wa’l-Nihaya, the article traces Imam Hussein’s journey to Iraq following letters from residents of Kufa, amid political tensions after Yazid ibn Muawiya (may the eternal curse of God be upon them) assumed power. It recounts the confrontation with forces under Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad (may the eternal wrath of God be upon him), then-governor of Kufa, which resulted in the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and a number of his family members and companions.

The report also discusses historical narrations concerning the Prophet’s foreknowledge of the tragedy, noting differences in the authentication of these accounts. It concludes by highlighting Karbala’s enduring significance, particularly among followers of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), who commemorate Ashura each year through mourning gatherings and ceremonies honoring Imam Hussein’s sacrifice and steadfastness in the face of injustice.
