Global Report Warns of Rising Islamophobia, Online Radicalization of Young People

——————————————-

A recent report by Egypt’s Global Fatwa Index has warned of growing Islamophobia, online hate speech and digital extremism, highlighting the increasing targeting of minors and young people through social media, encrypted messaging applications and online games.

The report found that hate speech and online polarization accounted for approximately 54% of the issues monitored internationally during August and September. It identified three overlapping forms of anti-Muslim hostility: physical attacks, racist and offensive symbolism, and organized online hate campaigns.

Reported incidents included vandalism and Nazi or anti-Muslim graffiti targeting Islamic centers and mosques in Britain and Belgium. Meanwhile, Spain’s Observatory Against Racism and Xenophobia reportedly recorded more than 54,000 pieces of offensive online content over a short period, around 88% of which targeted people of North African origin.

The report also warned that extremist networks increasingly use gradual recruitment and psychological influence, drawing teenagers from public platforms and online games into private, encrypted groups. It cited European security operations that identified thousands of extremist links and materials on Telegram in Portugal, alongside concerns in Germany and other European countries about the use of artificial intelligence and recommendation algorithms to spread inflammatory narratives and conspiracy theories to young audiences.

The Global Fatwa Index called on religious, educational and media institutions to strengthen digital monitoring, identify emerging threats and address incitement before it escalates. It also urged coordinated efforts to promote critical thinking among young people and counter extremist ideologies and online hatred.
