Russia Restores Historic Wooden Mosque in Tatarstan to Preserve Islamic Heritage

——————————————

Restoration work is underway on one of Tatarstan’s oldest surviving wooden mosques, a historic landmark dating back to 1742, as part of efforts to preserve the region’s Islamic architectural heritage.

The restoration project, located in the village of Asan-Yelga in Kukmor district, was inspected on October 7 by Tatarstan’s Mufti Kamil Samigullin, along with local officials and cultural heritage specialists.

The mosque, recognized as a regional heritage site, covers about 130.7 square meters and features traditional wooden architecture characteristic of Tatar villages along the Volga region.

Restoration began in May, when the wooden structure was carefully dismantled and transferred to a specialized workshop in Sukury village for inspection, repair and replacement of damaged components before being returned to its original location.

The next phase will focus on restoring the interior, upgrading facilities and improving the surrounding area while preserving the mosque’s historical character. The building includes two prayer halls, an entrance area, an octagonal three-level wooden minaret and a traditional mihrab.

Officials and community members praised local efforts to protect the mosque, with the mufti expressing hope that it will become a destination for visitors interested in Islamic history and cultural tourism after completion.

The project comes as Kazan has been named the Islamic World Cultural Capital for 2026 by ICESCO, highlighting Tatarstan’s centuries-old Islamic heritage.
