Rights Group Accuses Myanmar Authorities of Blocking Mosque Reconstruction After Earthquake

\nMyanmar\u2019s military authorities are facing growing criticism over alleged restrictions on the repair and reconstruction of mosques damaged by the devastating earthquake that struck the country in March 2025, with rights groups warning that the measures threaten Islamic religious heritage in the country.<\/p>\n
A report by the Burma Human Rights Network (BHRN), titled \u201cDenied the Right to Rebuild,\u201d said authorities have continued to impose obstacles on demolishing, repairing and rebuilding damaged mosques more than a year after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the earthquake damaged at least 180 mosques and Islamic religious sites across 29 towns and districts, while at least 670 Muslims were killed after mosques and religious buildings collapsed during gatherings.<\/p>\n
The rights group said restrictions on mosque maintenance and construction are part of a longstanding pattern, with Muslim communities facing lengthy procedures and difficulties obtaining official permits for basic repairs.<\/p>\n
The report stated that many damaged mosques remain awaiting approval for debris removal and reconstruction, while only a limited number of repair requests have reportedly received authorization. In some cases, communities have been forced to hold prayers in temporary locations.<\/p>\n
BHRN Executive Director Kyaw Win said successive governments and military authorities have made mosque maintenance increasingly difficult over decades.<\/p>\n
