UN: Children Account for 78% of Mine, War Remnant Victims in Afghanistan

————————————

The United Nations has warned that children accounted for 78 percent of victims of landmines and unexploded ordnance incidents in Afghanistan during the first eight months of 2026, highlighting the continued threat posed by explosive remnants of war despite a decline in military operations.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said mines and unexploded weapons remain a daily danger for civilians, particularly children who are often injured or killed while playing or moving through contaminated areas.

The agency stressed the urgent need to expand mine clearance operations and public awareness campaigns, warning of a significant funding gap affecting efforts to remove explosive remnants and provide safety education.

Afghanistan remains one of the countries most affected by decades of conflict, with large areas of residential, agricultural and public land still contaminated by mines and unexploded weapons.

Separately, Save the Children reported that at least 338 children were killed or injured by mines and unexploded ordnance during a previous monitoring period, underscoring the risks facing children even in areas where active fighting has ended.

The UN called for sustained funding for mine removal programs, victim support and rehabilitation services, warning that the end of conflict does not eliminate the dangers left behind.
