Muslim Women Protest Quebec Hijab Restrictions in Montreal

———————————

A group of Muslim women held a protest in downtown Montreal against Quebec’s secularism laws, including legislation restricting the wearing of religious symbols such as the hijab in certain public-sector jobs.

The demonstration took place on Monday, October 5, 2026, as voters in Quebec headed to the polls for provincial elections. Participants gathered outside the office of Quebec’s acting premier, Christine Fréchette, as part of an ongoing weekly protest campaign organized by the group “Muslim Women in Quebec Have Had Enough.”

Organizers said Quebec’s secularism laws, particularly Bill 21 and related measures, have negatively affected Muslim women who wear religious symbols, limiting their access to employment opportunities and career advancement in sectors such as education and healthcare.

The group said the legislation has created barriers preventing some women from fully participating in society, forcing some to leave their jobs or seek alternative professional and academic paths.

The latest demonstration marked the 18th consecutive weekly protest held outside the government office on Sherbrooke Street. Organizers said the end of the weekly gatherings would not mark the end of their campaign, but rather a transition toward other forms of advocacy and public awareness efforts.

The protests have taken place amid broader debate in Quebec over secularism, religious freedom and minority rights. Muslim organizations and human rights advocates have called for changes to the legislation, arguing that it disproportionately affects religious minorities, while supporters of the laws say they are necessary to preserve state neutrality.

Political parties in Quebec have taken different positions on the issue, with some supporting the continuation of the measures and others calling for a review of their impact on affected communities.
