Syria: Returnees to al-Dardara village set up tents amid ruins of destroyed homes

———————————-

Families returning to al-Dardara village in northern rural Tal Tamr, Hasakah province, are facing difficult living conditions as many have been forced to set up temporary tents beside their damaged homes due to the lack of resources needed for reconstruction.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, several returnees from the Washo Kani displacement camp have begun installing tents near their destroyed houses, seeking shelter after years of displacement while waiting for the possibility of rebuilding their homes.

The report said most houses in the village remain in need of extensive repairs before they can become suitable for permanent residence. Limited financial resources, high reconstruction costs, and shortages of basic services have left many families caught between staying in temporary shelters or searching for alternative housing.

Meanwhile, preparations are continuing for a fourth return convoy of displaced residents from Sere Kaniyeh/Ras al-Ayn, expected to include more than 500 families heading to villages in the Ras al-Ayn countryside as well as areas around Tal Tamr and Zarkan.

The new return movement follows the arrival of a previous convoy carrying around 511 families, as efforts continue to organize further returns. However, conditions vary from one area to another depending on the level of damage to homes, infrastructure, and essential services.

The displacement crisis in the region began after Turkey launched the “Operation Peace Spring” military campaign in 2019, alongside allied Syrian factions, which led to the displacement of an estimated 300,000 people from Ras al-Ayn and Tal Abyad in the early stages of the offensive, according to UN and human rights reports.
