Thousands Rally in London Against Far-Right Extremism and Islamophobia

—————————————-

Thousands of people took part in a large demonstration in east London to protest racism, Islamophobia, and the rise of far-right movements, marking the 90th anniversary of the historic Battle of Cable Street.

The march was held on Sunday, October 4, beginning outside Tower Hamlets Town Hall in Whitechapel and ending at St George’s Gardens on Cable Street. It was attended by trade unions, anti-racism organizations, and representatives of local communities.

Participants carried banners calling for an end to Islamophobia and far-right extremism, while emphasizing equality, dignity, and freedom for all communities. The demonstration also highlighted opposition to all forms of racism, including antisemitism and discrimination against Muslims.

The event recalled the Battle of Cable Street on October 4, 1936, when local residents, trade unionists, and anti-fascist activists confronted a planned march by the British Union of Fascists led by Oswald Mosley in an area with a large Jewish population at the time.

Speakers at the rally criticized anti-immigrant and anti-refugee rhetoric and called for stronger efforts to combat racism and protect social cohesion.
