\nA cultural study has highlighted the influence of Islamic arts and craftsmanship on the Bayeux Tapestry, one of Europe\u2019s best-known medieval visual artworks, pointing to a wider network of artistic and commercial exchange between Europe and the Islamic world.<\/p>\n
Dating to the 11th century and measuring about 70 meters in length, the Bayeux Tapestry depicts a continuous series of embroidered scenes recounting events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066, including figures, battles and aspects of political and social life.<\/p>\n
Diana Darke, a researcher specializing in West Asian cultures, wrote in an article published by Middle East Eye that several details of the tapestry reflect Eastern and Islamic influences. She noted, for example, that Harold\u2019s depiction while falcon hunting evokes a symbol of authority associated with Sasanian royal art.<\/p>\n
Eastern influences are particularly visible in the tapestry\u2019s upper and lower borders, which feature animals and other symbolic creatures. Darke linked some of these decorative motifs to luxury Islamic and Sasanian silk textiles that reached Europe through trade, diplomatic gifts and ecclesiastical collections.<\/p>\n
The study also connects the embroidery techniques used in the tapestry with practices known from textile workshops in Sicily and al-Andalus, including the use of surface threads secured with small stitches, particularly when working with silk and gold and silver threads.<\/p>\n
Islamic influence is also cited in dyeing techniques, with European textile production benefiting from materials and chemical knowledge circulating through the Islamic world. These included alum, which was used to fix dyes and preserve textile colors.<\/p>\n
The study further points to the extensive commercial links between Europe and the Islamic world, citing the eighth-century gold dinar minted by King Offa of Mercia, which imitated an Abbasid dinar and carried Arabic inscriptions including the Islamic declaration of faith.<\/p>\n
The study concludes that the Bayeux Tapestry is not only a visual record of the Norman conquest but also evidence of the movement of artistic techniques, motifs and ideas across the Mediterranean, reflecting the influence of Islamic and Sasanian traditions on the visual culture of medieval Europe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
