UN Warns of Continued Threat from Unexploded Ordnance in Afghanistan

———————————

The United Nations has warned that unexploded ordnance and remnants of war continue to pose a serious threat to civilians in Afghanistan, with children among those most vulnerable to injury and death.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that 64 incidents involving explosive remnants of war and unexploded ordnance had been recorded in eastern Afghanistan since the beginning of the year, resulting in 64 civilian casualties, including people killed and injured.

Dujarric said decades of armed conflict had left explosive remnants across parts of the country, creating persistent dangers for local communities. Children are particularly vulnerable because they may approach or handle unexploded devices without knowing the risks.

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners continue to conduct mine-risk education, clearance operations and assistance programmes for affected communities. However, Dujarric warned that severe funding shortages are hampering efforts to clear contaminated areas and expand public awareness programmes.

The UN stressed that sustained funding, clearance operations and risk education are essential to reduce civilian casualties and protect communities from the continuing legacy of conflict in Afghanistan.
