\nLithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da has warned that a series of recent incidents targeting Muslims and Islamic religious symbols in Lithuania may be part of organized campaigns rather than isolated acts.<\/p>\n
Speaking to LNK television, Naus\u0117da said the recurrence of alleged and confirmed incidents over a relatively short period suggested that they were not simply spontaneous emotional outbursts and that those behind them should be identified. He stressed the importance of preserving Lithuania as a country where different religions and cultures can coexist peacefully.<\/p>\n
His comments followed two incidents in September. In Vilnius, the Quran was publicly burned in an incident that police are investigating as possible hooliganism. In Kaunas, a group of bikers disrupted Muslim prayers near a mosque, reportedly playing loud music, chanting patriotic slogans and displaying a pig\u2019s head. Police launched a pre-trial investigation into possible incitement against a group and interference with religious services.<\/p>\n
Naus\u0117da also addressed the country\u2019s ongoing debate over migration, saying the issue should be dealt with directly rather than through actions targeting religious communities.
