\nHuman Rights Watch has urged world leaders to protect international justice institutions and uphold international law, warning that efforts to weaken accountability mechanisms could undermine justice for victims of serious crimes.<\/p>\n
Human Rights Watch called on leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York to defend human rights and international law, warning against attempts to undermine institutions responsible for holding perpetrators of serious international crimes accountable.<\/p>\n
The organisation stressed the need to protect international justice mechanisms, particularly the International Criminal Court (ICC), cautioning that pressure and sanctions targeting the court and human rights defenders could obstruct victims\u2019 access to justice.<\/p>\n
Human Rights Watch noted that the General Assembly meetings are taking place amid multiple crises and conflicts, including in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar, Haiti and Afghanistan. It urged governments to prioritise civilian protection and accountability for serious violations.<\/p>\n
The organisation also warned that weakening the ICC\u2019s independence could have consequences extending beyond any single case or country, given the court\u2019s investigations and proceedings related to conflicts and crises worldwide.<\/p>\n
In addition, Human Rights Watch highlighted the United Nations\u2019 financial difficulties, warning that delays by some member states in paying their contributions threaten the organisation\u2019s ability to carry out its responsibilities, including human rights programmes and peacekeeping operations.<\/p>\n
The organisation called on governments committed to international law to strengthen cooperation against efforts to weaken international institutions and ensure that human rights and UN mechanisms receive adequate funding and personnel.<\/p>\n
