London Store Video Draws Attention to Gender-Separated Queues

———————————————-

A video filmed inside an Asian grocery store in East London has drawn attention after showing male and female shoppers forming separate queues while receiving food products, highlighting how some Muslims maintain religious and cultural practices concerning gender interaction in public settings.

The footage was recorded at Masala Bazaar in the Romford area during the store’s third-anniversary celebrations. Women, including some wearing headscarves and accompanied by children, were seen queuing on one side of the store to receive cooking oil, while men formed a separate queue on the other side.

According to reports, the separate queues first appeared on August 28 while staff were distributing cooking oil to customers. Similar arrangements were reportedly observed on subsequent days as other food products were distributed.

The store manager said management had not instructed customers to form gender-segregated queues. Staff had simply asked shoppers to form a queue, after which male and female customers spontaneously chose to stand on separate sides.

The scene reflects the way some Muslims seek to observe religious teachings and cultural practices concerning modesty and boundaries between men and women, including while living in Western societies. It does not indicate that the separation was imposed by the store.

The video’s circulation has also prompted discussion on social media about religious and cultural diversity in Britain, particularly in areas such as Romford, which have undergone significant demographic changes in recent decades. The incident offers a glimpse into how some Muslim communities maintain aspects of their religious and cultural practices in everyday public life.
