At the Al-Huda Islamic Center in Fishers, security personnel and police patrols near the mosque have become part of Friday prayer precautions. Despite these measures, community leaders say Muslims remain committed to practicing their faith openly and keeping mosques accessible to the public.<\/p>\n
The heightened concerns follow controversial remarks by Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, who made statements about Islam that drew criticism from Muslim leaders, religious figures, and state officials. Beckwith later defended his position, saying his views on Islam should be distinguished from his treatment of individual Muslims.<\/p>\n
Muslim leaders say security concerns have become increasingly visible, particularly among women and girls who wear hijab and others who are easily identified as Muslim. At the same time, mosques are seeking to challenge stereotypes by welcoming visitors and encouraging interfaith conversations.<\/p>\n
The concerns come amid broader reports of rising discrimination against Muslims in the United States. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported receiving 8,683 complaints in 2025, the highest annual figure since its records began in 1996, compared with 8,658 complaints in 2024.<\/p>\n
A 2026 Pew Research Center survey also found that 59% of American Muslims believe there is a significant level of discrimination against Muslims in the country.<\/p>\n
