More Than 55,000 Sudanese Flee to Chad as Displacement Crisis Worsens

\nMore than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed into Chad since the beginning of the year as the ongoing war in Sudan continues to drive a growing humanitarian crisis, the United Nations refugee agency said.<\/p>\n
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported a sharp increase in border crossings in recent days, with more than 400 people arriving in Chad each day over the past week through the eastern border areas of Adr\u00e9 and Tine. The rate is around 20 times higher than previous monthly averages.<\/p>\n
The agency warned that the rapid influx is placing additional pressure on humanitarian operations. A reception center in Tine is currently hosting more than 4,300 refugees in need of essential services.<\/p>\n
UNHCR also reported that women and girls among those fleeing Sudan have described experiencing serious violence during their journeys to safety.<\/p>\n
The war, which began in April 2023, has forced around 11.3 million people from their homes, including 6.4 million internally displaced people inside Sudan. More than 3.5 million Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries or sought asylum abroad.<\/p>\n
The UN agency said conditions remain critical, particularly in Darfur, while concerns are increasing in areas such as Kordofan and the Blue Nile region, where fighting, insecurity, airstrikes and drone attacks continue to push more civilians to flee.<\/p>\n
UNHCR warned that a severe funding shortage is threatening relief efforts. Only 18% of the $1.6 billion required for the regional refugee response plan has been secured, raising concerns over the continuation of food assistance and basic services for displaced populations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
