France: Young Muslim women increasingly choose hijab as expression of religious identity, studies show

\nThe choice of wearing the hijab among young Muslim women in France has increased significantly over the past two decades, with researchers linking the trend to religious identity, personal choice, and a sense of belonging rather than only family traditions.<\/p>\n
According to data cited by Al Jazeera, based on surveys by the French polling institute Ifop, 45% of Muslim women aged 18 to 24 in France reported wearing the hijab in 2025, compared with 16% in 2003. In contrast, hijab use among Muslim women over the age of 50 declined from 35% to 16% during the same period, indicating a generational shift.<\/p>\n
Sociologist Tariq Yildiz said the hijab has become, for many young Muslim women, a way to express religious belonging and pride in their identity. Survey findings showed that 38% of respondents viewed the hijab as a means of expressing their faith, while fewer than 2% said family pressure was the main reason behind their choice.<\/p>\n
The research also highlighted social factors influencing the decision, with 44% of respondents saying the hijab helps reduce unwanted attention in public spaces, and 42% associating it with a greater sense of security.<\/p>\n
