\nMosques across the UK are being used as new hate crime reporting hubs in an effort to make it easier and safer for Muslim victims to report abuse and overcome barriers that have prevented many from coming forward.<\/p>\n
The initiative, launched in Peterborough, includes reporting centers at the Faizan-e-Madina Mosque, Khadijah Mosque, and the Kurdish Community Center. Trained volunteers will help identify hate-related incidents, guide victims through reporting procedures, and connect them with support services.<\/p>\n
Community leaders said many Muslims have historically been reluctant to report Islamophobic incidents due to feelings of fear, mistrust, or the belief that such abuse is something they must simply endure. Faisal Mahmood, secretary of the Joint Mosque Council, said the new hubs aim to change this perception by providing a familiar and trusted environment.<\/p>\n
Cambridgeshire Police recorded around 600 hate crime incidents of all types in Peterborough between August 2025 and August 2026. The force said the new centers are part of efforts to improve access to reporting and ensure hate crimes are properly recorded and investigated.<\/p>\n
The initiative follows concerns within the local Muslim community over rising vulnerability after recent incidents of far-right violence and religiously motivated attacks. Community representatives said some Muslims had changed their daily routines or avoided public spaces due to fear.<\/p>\n
Supporters of the scheme said hate crimes can have wider effects beyond physical attacks, including making people feel unwelcome because of their religious identity or appearance. They called for greater tolerance and understanding between communities.<\/p>\n
