West Bengal Government Orders Closure of 252 Madrasas After Statewide Survey

The West Bengal government has announced the closure of 252 madrasas following a three-month statewide survey that examined the status and operations of religious educational institutions across the state.<\/p>\n
Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Minister Kshudiram Tudu said the affected institutions lacked official approval or had other irregularities. He added that the madrasas would be given an opportunity to respond, but further action would be taken if their explanations were deemed unsatisfactory.<\/p>\n
According to government officials, the survey covered all 22 districts and reviewed details including management structures, teachers, students, infrastructure, and sources of funding. The findings showed that 2,132 madrasas were operating with proper authorization, while 2,396 were functioning without approval from the relevant government board or authority.<\/p>\n
Malda recorded the highest number of closures with 45 institutions, followed by Uttar Dinajpur with 37, and South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Nadia with 25 closures each. Another 100 madrasas were issued show-cause notices over alleged serious irregularities.<\/p>\n
The government said the survey was aimed at collecting reliable data, improving educational planning, supporting child welfare initiatives, and identifying institutions operating outside legal requirements.<\/p>\n
The decision has sparked political controversy. West Bengal BJP leaders welcomed the closures, arguing that action against unauthorized institutions was necessary. Some BJP figures also linked the issue to security concerns, alleging that certain unregulated madrasas had been associated with unlawful activities.<\/p>\n
Opposition parties criticized what they described as attempts to portray the madrasa education system negatively. Trinamool Congress leaders said action should be taken against institutions involved in fraud or misuse of funds but warned against shutting down recognized madrasas solely because of their religious identity.<\/p>\n
The controversy comes amid broader debates in India over the regulation of religious schools and minority institutions.
