\nThe U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has released more than 70 previously classified intelligence documents marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, revealing details about warnings provided to U.S. leaders in the years before the attacks regarding Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n
The documents, which include 71 Presidential Daily Brief (PDB) intelligence products from the administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, show that U.S. intelligence analysts had been monitoring Al-Qaeda\u2019s activities and had warned senior officials about possible attacks on American targets before September 11.<\/p>\n
Among the released materials are assessments indicating concerns that Al-Qaeda could attempt major attacks inside the United States, including warnings about the possibility of using aircraft in an attack. One 1998 intelligence assessment referenced the possibility that the group could use an aircraft loaded with explosives against a U.S. city.<\/p>\n
The documents also detail intelligence efforts to track bin Laden\u2019s movements, Al-Qaeda\u2019s financing networks, and the group\u2019s plans and capabilities. Officials said the release provides additional insight into the information available to policymakers before the attacks, while not fundamentally changing previous understandings of intelligence failures surrounding September 11.<\/p>\n
The September 11 attacks were carried out by Al-Qaeda operatives who hijacked four commercial airplanes, striking the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., while a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control.
