Two Renoir Paintings Stolen in French Riviera Museum Break-In

\nTwo paintings by renowned French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir have been stolen from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, while two other artworks taken during the burglary were later recovered after being abandoned by the suspects.<\/p>\n
Local authorities said the break-in occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Tuesday, when two thieves reportedly cut through the museum garden fence and entered the building through a window.<\/p>\n
The stolen works include \u201cMadame Colonna Romano\u201d and \u201cYoung Woman at the Well,\u201d both Renoir paintings on loan from the famous Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay in Paris.<\/p>\n
The thieves also took two other works, \u201cMadame Pichon\u201d and \u201cCoco Reading,\u201d but reportedly dropped them in the museum gardens after police were alerted by the alarm system and began pursuing the suspects.<\/p>\n
French authorities have opened an investigation into suspected organized theft. A local official described the stolen artworks as \u201cpriceless,\u201d noting that selling widely recognized works of this significance on the open market would be extremely difficult.<\/p>\n
The Renoir Museum was established in 1960 inside the home where the artist spent the final years of his life near Nice. Renoir, who died in 1919, created many works there. The museum houses around 13 paintings, approximately 40 sculptures, and a collection of furniture and photographs related to the artist.<\/p>\n
The theft has renewed concerns over museum security in France. A recent parliamentary report warned of limited resources for protecting cultural institutions, while a 2024 survey by the French Culture Ministry found that only one in four cultural institutions surveyed had emergency and risk-prevention plans, and nearly half lacked video surveillance systems.<\/p>\n
