UN Warns of Renewed Large-Scale Conflict in Yemen, Urges Immediate De-escalation

The United Nations has expressed concern over escalating military tensions in Yemen, warning that recent clashes could expand into a wider conflict and further deepen the suffering of civilians after more than a decade of war.<\/p>\n
UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg said that recent attacks by Ansar Allah (the Houthis) across several frontlines have triggered increasingly intense fighting, describing the developments as \u201cextremely alarming.\u201d He cited reports of civilian casualties, displacement of families, and damage to civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Grundberg warned that a return to sustained large-scale fighting would have severe consequences for Yemen\u2019s population and make the already difficult process of reaching a political settlement even more complicated. He stressed that Yemenis need security, functioning institutions, and a credible political path addressing the country\u2019s political, security, and economic challenges.<\/p>\n
The UN envoy called on all parties to immediately stop hostilities, exercise maximum restraint, and use existing communication channels, including the UN-backed Military Coordination Committee, to prevent further escalation. He also urged all sides to comply with international humanitarian law and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The warning comes amid a significant increase in military activity in Yemen, with UN officials previously describing the current situation as one of the highest risks of a return to major conflict since the 2022 UN-mediated truce. Recent fighting has reportedly affected several areas, including Ma\u2019rib, Hadramawt, Taiz, and the western coast, while concerns have also grown over attacks affecting Red Sea maritime routes.<\/p>\n
Grundberg said he would continue direct engagement with Yemeni parties and regional actors in an effort to contain the escalation and preserve space for dialogue. He also called on international and regional powers to use their influence to support de-escalation and a return to political negotiations.<\/p>\n
