UN: Toxic Wildfire Smoke Linked to 100,000 Additional Deaths Annually

\nThe World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations agency, has reported that toxic smoke generated by wildfires caused an estimated 100,000 additional deaths annually between 2010 and 2018, warning that the actual figure could be higher.<\/p>\n
According to a new report by the organization, severe wildfire smoke events have tripled worldwide since the 1990s, as climate-related factors, including rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves, contribute to an increase in the scale and intensity of wildfires.<\/p>\n
The report stated that wildfire pollution has become an increasingly significant source of atmospheric contamination, even as many developed countries have succeeded in reducing harmful emissions from industrial activities and transportation through environmental regulations and climate policies.<\/p>\n
The WMO highlighted the growing impact of fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone, two major pollutants associated with respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular diseases. The agency warned that pollution from wildfires and extreme heat events could undermine global efforts to improve air quality.<\/p>\n
The report noted that in 2025, levels of fine particulate matter exceeded normal averages in northern Canada, parts of Russia, and areas of western and central Africa due to a significant rise in wildfire activity. It also identified northwestern Spain as an area affected by severe air pollution following intense and unprecedented wildfires during the late summer of 2025.<\/p>\n
The United Nations called for stronger monitoring and regulation of pollutants such as black carbon (soot) and microplastics, stating that current oversight remains insufficient despite the widespread presence of these substances in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n
