The new standards, scheduled to take effect in 2030, include lessons addressing what they describe as \u201cradical Islam\u201d and its connection to the September 11, 2001 attacks. They also include references to \u201cjihadist teachings\u201d in discussions of historical Muslim expansion into Christian lands, as well as content that critics say portrays the Holy Prophet and Islamic history in a problematic way.<\/p>\n
A content adviser to the Texas education board warned in a review that some descriptions included in the standards were historically inaccurate. The adviser argued that the treatment of Islam and its historical development did not follow the neutral, descriptive approach generally applied when teaching about other religions and cultural traditions.<\/p>\n
Critics also raised concerns over the board\u2019s earlier rejection of a proposal to include Muslim contributions to fields such as algebra and astronomy in the curriculum.<\/p>\n
