Water Shortages Worsen in Germany, Europe Amid Rising Temperatures

\nWater shortages in Germany and across Europe have intensified in recent months due to rising temperatures and increasing evaporation rates, according to joint studies conducted by Germany\u2019s Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, the US space agency NASA, and the German Aerospace Center.<\/p>\n
Researchers warned that water reserves may not recover by the end of the year, even if autumn rainfall exceeds normal levels. The studies monitor total water storage both on the Earth\u2019s surface and underground to assess long-term changes in water availability.<\/p>\n
Anette G\u00fcntner, head of Global Geodetic Monitoring and Gravity Field Research at the Helmholtz Centre, said Germany has experienced increasingly dry conditions since 2015 compared with the previous 15-year period. Although heavy rainfall in 2024 helped replenish water reserves, levels declined sharply again afterward.<\/p>\n
Researchers said groundwater depletion is the main factor behind the long-term decline in Germany\u2019s water resources. They added that current data up to June has not yet fully reflected the impact of the recent hot summer, with the effects of heatwaves expected to appear in upcoming autumn assessments.<\/p>\n
The scientists noted that while rainfall patterns do not show a significant long-term decline, higher temperatures are increasing potential evaporation, meaning more water is transferred from the land surface into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n
