\nThe World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has called for stronger international action over what it describes as an ongoing campaign to assimilate Uyghurs and other Turkic communities in China\u2019s Xinjiang region, warning that cultural, linguistic, and religious identities are under threat.<\/p>\n
In its latest briefing, the organization highlighted its participation in international forums focused on self-determination and human rights, while urging governments, businesses, and civil society groups to take further measures addressing alleged rights violations.<\/p>\n
The WUC pointed to a 2022 assessment by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which documented serious human rights concerns in Xinjiang and said some violations \u201cmay constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
The organization also criticized China\u2019s recently introduced Ethnic Unity Law, claiming it could further restrict Uyghur cultural and religious expression. Beijing has rejected accusations of systematic abuses, stating that its policies in Xinjiang aim to promote stability, economic development, and ethnic unity.<\/p>\n
The WUC called on governments to use diplomatic and legal measures, urged companies to address forced-labor risks in supply chains, and appealed for stronger engagement through international institutions, including the UN Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n
