UNICEF Warns One in Five Children Experience Digital Abuse

\nThe United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has warned of the growing threat of technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse, reporting that nearly one in five children experienced at least one form of digital abuse within a single year.<\/p>\n
In its report \u201cFrom a Child\u2019s Perspective: How Digital Technologies Enable Child Sexual Abuse,\u201d UNICEF said around 20 million children aged 12 to 17 in 21 countries were affected by online sexual exploitation and abuse. More than 15 million were exposed to unwanted sexual content, while nearly 9 million were pressured into sexual conversations or sharing explicit images. Around 4 million children had their sexual images shared without consent.<\/p>\n
The report found that nearly 60% of incidents occurred on social media and messaging platforms, while 14% took place through online gaming environments. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said many victims suffer severe emotional and psychological harm and often remain silent due to fear or lack of support.<\/p>\n
UNICEF noted that children exposed to online abuse were more likely to experience anxiety and self-harm-related thoughts or behaviors. More than 40% of cases were never reported, and fewer than 1% reached authorities.<\/p>\n
The agency called for stronger child protection measures online, including safer digital platforms, improved laws, effective reporting systems, and greater cooperation between governments, technology companies, families, and communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
