Denmark Discovers Largest Viking Age Silver Hoard

\nA routine backyard renovation in northern Denmark has led to the discovery of the country\u2019s largest known Viking Age silver hoard, with archaeologists uncovering nearly 18.5 kilograms of silver dating to the 10th century.<\/p>\n
The treasure was discovered in the Rebild area after a homeowner encountered buried metal objects while preparing the garden for a terrace. An archaeological excavation subsequently uncovered around 700 silver artefacts, including ingots, bracelets, jewellery and 47 complete and fragmented coins.<\/p>\n
Many of the coins are Islamic silver dirhams from the Arab world, while others originated in England. Archaeologists say the collection highlights the extensive trade networks that connected Viking Scandinavia with the Middle East and the British Isles more than 1,000 years ago.<\/p>\n
The hoard is nearly three times larger than the previous largest Viking silver discovery in Denmark. Researchers said approximately 6.4 kilograms of silver remained preserved inside the ceramic vessel in which the treasure had originally been buried.<\/p>\n
Experts believe the collection was deliberately concealed during a period of political instability or conflict and was never recovered. Silver served both as currency and a store of wealth during the Viking Age, with traders often valuing it by weight rather than relying solely on coins.<\/p>\n
The artefacts will undergo conservation and scientific analysis at the National Museum of Denmark to determine their origins, composition and historical significance. The collection is later expected to be exhibited at the Fyrkat Viking Museum.<\/p>\n
