Australia Launches First National Index to Monitor and Measure Islamophobia<\/p>\n
Australia has announced the launch of the first national index to monitor and measure attitudes towards Islam and Muslims across the country. This initiative aims to provide more accurate data on bias and discrimination against Muslims and support efforts to enhance social cohesion.<\/p>\n
The Office of the Australian Special Envoy for Combating Islamophobia stated that the index will be implemented in collaboration with the “Scanlon Foundation” research institution, relying on a nationally representative sample of the Australian community. This will allow for the tracking of public opinion trends and their comparison across different demographic groups and regions.<\/p>\n
The project aims to build a database that aids in understanding the nature of attitudes towards Muslims and the factors driving bias and discrimination, rather than relying solely on individual cases and personal experiences to assess the scope of the phenomenon.<\/p>\n
The Office of the Special Envoy emphasized that combating Islamophobia requires reliance on credible evidence and data, noting that the new index will assist in developing more effective solutions and policies to address discrimination and promote equality.<\/p>\n
The research will also address factors that contribute to enhancing Muslims’ sense of belonging, acceptance, and equal participation in Australian society, in addition to monitoring changes in public attitudes towards Islam and Muslims over time.<\/p>\n
The results of the index are set to be published in an annual report, allowing the government, researchers, and community institutions to utilize the data in formulating policies and programs related to combating Islamophobia and promoting coexistence and social cohesion.<\/p>\n
