The French Islamic Council has warned of the consequences of political discourse targeting veiled Muslim women in France, asserting that associating the hijab with extremism contributes to increasing social stigmatization and exposes women to insults, threats, intimidation, and assaults. <\/p>\n
In a statement, the council condemned the statements made by some political figures attempting to link Muslim women who wear the hijab to extremist ideologies, describing such positions as “irresponsible” due to their potential direct impact on the safety of women in French society. <\/p>\n
The council emphasized that the discourse portraying veiled women as suspects or threats does not remain confined within the framework of political debate but can create a more hostile social environment towards them, making them susceptible to further discrimination and harassment.<\/p>\n
The council noted that veiled women are already facing various forms of insults, threats, intimidation, and assaults, warning that continued political and media escalation regarding the hijab may exacerbate this phenomenon.<\/p>\n
It stressed that those fueling this discourse bear political and moral responsibility for its repercussions, calling for the issue to be addressed in a manner that preserves the dignity, rights, and personal freedoms of women.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the council rejected the characterisation of the hijab as a product of contemporary extremist ideology, pointing out that head coverings have religious and historical roots in traditions associated with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.<\/p>\n
The council affirmed that the position of the French Republic should be based on respecting a woman’s freedom to choose her attire, whether she decides to wear the hijab or not, with assurances of protection from discrimination, threats, and violence because of this choice.<\/p>\n
