UNICEF Warns of Rising Child Mortality as Global Aid Declines<\/p>\n
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that decades of progress in reducing child mortality globally are at risk of reversal, due to a sharp decline in international development aid and increasing financial pressures faced by low-income countries. <\/p>\n
UNICEF reported that investments made worldwide over the past two decades in immunization, nutrition, strengthening health systems, and providing water and sanitation services have significantly contributed to safeguarding children’s lives. As a result, the annual number of deaths among children under five has fallen from approximately 10.1 million to 4.9 million cases.<\/p>\n
The organization attributed this improvement to sustained political will, as well as the provision of funding and investment in essential health and social services. However, it warned that a decline in international support could endanger these achievements.<\/p>\n
According to the report, official development assistance worldwide saw a sharp decrease of 23.1% in 2025, marking the largest annual decline since these metrics were first monitored. This year also represented the second consecutive year of declining aid, returning to levels recorded around a decade ago.<\/p>\n
UNICEF explained that the decrease in international funding coincides with rising debt burdens on low-income countries and the limited capacity of their national budgets to finance essential services, placing increasing pressure on the health and social systems that have contributed to reducing child mortality rates over recent years.<\/p>\n
The organization warned that children would be the most affected by aid cuts, particularly in countries that heavily rely on external support for funding immunization, nutrition, healthcare, and water and sanitation programs.<\/p>\n
Estimates in the report indicate that the year 2025 could mark a worrying turning point, potentially being the first year in decades where the declining trend in child mortality does not continue, with a possible increase in the number of deaths.<\/p>\n
According to UNICEF, nearly half of the potential increase in child mortality is expected to occur in countries experiencing unstable political or security situations, where funding cuts coincide with conflicts, poverty, and weak health systems.<\/p>\n
The UN’s warnings called for the protection of investments designated for children’s health, nutrition, and essential services, fearing that continued aid declines could undermine the achievements of the past two decades and push millions of children, particularly in the poorest and most fragile countries, back into the health risk circle that had been significantly reduced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
