American Agency: Cisco May Have Fostered a Hostile Work Environment for Muslims and Arabs<\/p>\n
Media reports have revealed that the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has found indications that Cisco Systems, a networking technology company, may have violated the civil rights of Muslim employees and those of Middle Eastern descent. This conclusion stems from complaints regarding a hostile work environment and anti-Arab and anti-Muslim content on the company’s internal social media platforms.<\/p>\n
According to media accounts citing a letter from the U.S. agency responsible for enforcing anti-discrimination laws in the workplace, the investigation was initiated following a complaint filed by employees of the company in late 2024. This was after internal conflicts related to Cisco’s technological partnerships with Israel and the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n
A group of employees within the company initiated an internal movement urging Cisco to cease providing technology to the Israeli government and military, amid objections over the potential use of these technologies in military operations in Gaza. Additionally, employees sent an open letter to the company’s management addressing this issue, which garnered signatures from more than 1,700 employees out of a total workforce exceeding 86,000, according to reports.<\/p>\n
Employees later accused Cisco’s management of deleting the open letter from its internal platform and placing it under review. They also reported that pressure and harassment were exerted against some of the signatories. Furthermore, Arab and Muslim employees spoke of experiencing what they perceived as discriminatory treatment within the work environment.<\/p>\n
Reports indicated that the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission concluded there are reasons to believe the company may have subjected some of its employees to a hostile work environment, while these findings did not constitute a final legal judgment concerning the allegations against the company.<\/p>\n
This issue arises amid growing objections within several major American technology companies regarding contracts and technological services provided to Israel.
