The death toll from the devastating floods and torrents that struck vast areas of Nepal has risen to 1,127, while 4,858 people are still missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with intensified efforts on both the Nepalese and Chinese sides of the border. According to the “Kathmandu Post,” quoting sources in the Nepalese police, the death toll increased after more bodies were recovered from the affected areas, and bodies were also found in neighboring India. Emergency teams have managed to rescue 6,541 people so far.<\/p>\n
The floods swept through the northern regions of Nepal on August 26, after an enormous amount of water flowed towards the Bhote Koshi River, following an earthquake and landslides that caused destructive torrents carrying large quantities of mud, rocks, and debris.<\/p>\n
Rescue teams continue to search for thousands of missing persons in the afflicted areas, while the aftermath of the floods and landslides still hampers access to some damaged sites. On the Chinese side of the border, China Central Television reported that rescue teams successfully reopened the road leading to the Geelong border crossing with Nepal on Tuesday morning, September 2, after removing the obstacles left by floods and landslides.<\/p>\n
The reopening of the road allowed additional machinery and heavy equipment to reach the disaster area, coinciding with the expansion of search operations for the missing and the advance of rescue teams into areas that were previously inaccessible in recent days.<\/p>\n
