The European Union has imposed new regulatory restrictions on a number of digital platforms, including “ChatGPT,” in a move that subjects widely-used artificial intelligence services to stricter requirements related to safety, transparency, and risk assessment. On Monday, the European Union listed the “ChatGPT” application among the digital services subject to a higher level of scrutiny under the “Digital Services Act,” while categorizing the platforms “Reddit” and “Roblox” as “very large” online platforms, according to the “Agence France-Presse.”<\/p>\n
EU technology official Hinna Virkkunen stated that “ChatGPT,” “Reddit,” and “Roblox” would be subjected to higher levels of oversight and accountability within EU member states, given their extensive reach and influence on users and society. The classification of “very large” platforms or search engines applies to services with more than 45 million active monthly users within the European Union, comprising 27 countries, a threshold the three services have reportedly exceeded.<\/p>\n
Under the new classification, the companies operating these services will have four months to comply with the additional obligations stipulated in the “Digital Services Act,” which is one of the EU’s key legal frameworks for regulating the operation of major digital platforms. These obligations include conducting regular risk assessments associated with the services and algorithms, including the potential for the spread of illegal content, the impact on minors, and possible risks to the physical and psychological safety of users, along with measures to mitigate these risks.<\/p>\n
According to the announced data, the European Union resorted to classifying “ChatGPT” under the category of search engines for the purpose of applying certain provisions of the “Digital Services Act,” marking a precedent that expands the scope of European oversight to directly include one of the foremost generative AI services.
