Venice’s Muslims Call for Legal Solutions to Provide Suitable Places of Worship<\/p>\n
Representatives of Muslim communities in the Italian city of Venice have called on local authorities to open a dialogue to find legal and sustainable solutions to provide suitable places for performing religious rituals, in light of measures affecting several sites used for prayer.<\/p>\n
The demands came after the Venice municipality tightened its measures against a number of places of worship, including commercial buildings and warehouses used for prayer, due to violations related to building regulations and the suitability of some sites for accommodating worshippers, particularly during Friday prayers.<\/p>\n
Community representatives emphasized that Muslims form part of the social and economic fabric of the city, working in various sectors including hotels, restaurants, markets, and factories, in addition to paying taxes, sending their children to schools, and participating in public life.<\/p>\n
Kamrul Said, the head of the Bengali School in Venice, stated that the closure of currently used prayer sites raises questions about alternative locations where Muslims can perform their rituals.<\/p>\n
The community representatives stressed that they are not asking for special treatment, but for the establishment of a legal framework that ensures suitable places of worship are available near Muslim residential areas, in accordance with local laws and the right to practice religious rituals.<\/p>\n
