Malaysia Sets September 29 for First Return of Myanmar Nationals Under Voluntary Repatriation Program<\/p>\n
Malaysian authorities have set September 29 as the date to begin the first phase of a program to return Myanmar nationals, as part of voluntary repatriation arrangements involving thousands of people, most of them Rohingya Muslims.
\nAccording to Reuters, Malaysia\u2019s Ministry of Home Affairs said the first phase will involve 1,476 people identified by Myanmar authorities, as part of an understanding between the two countries regarding the return of Myanmar nationals currently in Malaysia.
\nMalaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously announced that Myanmar had agreed to receive 5,000 Rohingya, amid growing debate in Malaysia over the situation of refugees and migrants arriving from Myanmar.
\nThe Ministry of Home Affairs said the repatriation operation will involve two Myanmar naval vessels and a hospital ship. It added that around 4,008 people, most of them Rohingya, will be included in a documentation process this year, alongside the 5,000 people scheduled for voluntary repatriation under the agreement between the two sides.
\nAccording to Malaysian data, 10,388 Myanmar nationals were being held in immigration detention centers as of August 15. Authorities stressed that the figure includes various categories and that not all detainees can be considered refugees.
\nThe move comes amid the continuing humanitarian crisis facing the Rohingya, after more than one million were forced to flee Myanmar\u2019s Rakhine State, particularly following the widespread violence that swept the region in 2017. Most sought refuge in Bangladesh and other countries in the region.
\nCitizenship remains one of the most significant challenges facing the Rohingya, as Myanmar authorities recognize only a limited number of them as citizens. This further complicates efforts to repatriate them and ensure their rights and security after their return.
\nThe September 29 operation is expected to mark the first phase of implementing the program, with attention focused on how the principle of voluntary return will be applied and what guarantees will be provided to those returning, particularly given the continuing complex security and humanitarian situation inside Myanmar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
