Calgary Islamic Heritage Festival Celebrates Cultural Diversity and Community Connections
\nThe Canadian city of Calgary hosted the 16th edition of the Islamic Heritage Festival, with broad participation from Arab and Muslim communities and various segments of Canadian society. The cultural and social event aimed to showcase Islamic heritage and promote communication and understanding between cultures.
\nThe festival attracted large numbers of families and visitors from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. Over several hours, it featured a variety of cultural and recreational activities, including traditional clothing displays, popular foods, models, and artworks reflecting the cultural heritage of several Arab and Muslim countries, along with competitions and activities for children.
\nInstitutions and organizations representing various Muslim communities also participated, presenting examples of their countries\u2019 cultures and traditions. Spaces were dedicated to traditional foods and introducing visitors to customs and folk heritage, reflecting the great diversity of Canada\u2019s Muslim community.
\nKamal Khan, Vice President of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), said the festival, which has been held for 16 years, contributes to building bridges of communication and closer relations between Muslims and different segments of society. He added that it provides an open space for dialogue and mutual understanding and helps correct stereotypes through direct interaction.
\nGreg McLean, Member of the Canadian Parliament for Calgary Centre, also attended the event, emphasizing the importance of learning about different cultures and deepening understanding of the diversity that forms part of Canadian society. He highlighted the contributions made by Muslim communities through their diverse cultures.
\nRepresentatives of participating institutions said cultural festivals provide an opportunity to introduce the public to the diversity of Muslims from different countries and cultural backgrounds. They also help promote integration and engagement with the local community while reinforcing values of friendship, understanding, and mutual respect.
\nThe festival was held amid heightened security measures after threats and inflammatory posts targeting some of the participating Islamic organizations were reported. Calgary Police said they were monitoring the threats and taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of participants and visitors.
\nThe festival concluded with recognition of participating children and the presentation of encouragement awards.
