International Migration Records the Largest Weekly Displacement Wave in Yemen in 2026<\/p>\n
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported the largest weekly displacement wave in Yemen since the beginning of this year, amidst ongoing military escalation and deteriorating security conditions in several governorates. <\/p>\n
The organization stated that its Displacement Tracking Matrix recorded the displacement of 218 families, comprising approximately 1,308 individuals, during the period from August 16 to 22, marking the highest weekly tally recorded in 2026. <\/p>\n
It further explained that most displacement cases originated from the coastal districts of Taiz Governorate, particularly Mawza, Maqbanah, and Mocha, as well as from the districts of Hays and Al-Jarahi in the southern part of Al Hudaydah Governorate, areas which have witnessed military operations, shelling, and forced evictions.<\/p>\n
According to the organization, the majority of displaced families settled in safer areas within Taiz Governorate, which received 180 families, followed by Al Hudaydah with 16 families, then Marib with 13 families, while Lahij Governorate received nine families.<\/p>\n
The organization highlighted that security concerns related to the conflict were the primary reason for the displacement, forcing 212 families, representing approximately 97% of new cases, to leave their areas, while economic conditions resulted in the displacement of six families, accounting for 3%.<\/p>\n
Moreover, the organization reported an additional 35 displaced families, included in the previous reporting period, bringing the total displacement count from the beginning of the year until August 22 to 2,241 families, comprising approximately 13,446 individuals.<\/p>\n
During the previous week, the organization recorded the displacement of 176 families from the governorates of Marib, Al Hudaydah, and Taiz, amid escalating missile and drone attacks accompanied by human and infrastructural losses.<\/p>\n
