India has lifted a ban on wheat exports that lasted for more than four years, a move poised to increase global market supply and alleviate pressures on importing countries, concurrent with disruptions facing grain trade across the Black Sea region. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade in India announced the resumption of wheat exports, alongside flour and a number of processed agricultural products, following the government’s permission last February to ship limited quantities to foreign markets.<\/p>\n
India’s return to the export market, being the second-largest wheat producer in the world, is expected to bolster available supplies for importing countries, particularly in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The decision comes as India’s wheat production rose to a record 120.6 million tons in the last season, boosting stocks and enabling New Delhi to reopen export avenues after years of restrictions imposed to protect the domestic market.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that the abundant harvest, along with global price levels and shipping costs, has made Indian wheat more competitive in Asian and Middle Eastern markets. One Indian company has already commenced loading a shipment of approximately 22,000 tons of wheat at Kandla port in the west of the country.<\/p>\n
India had imposed a ban on wheat exports in 2022, with restrictions continuing through 2023 and 2024, following severe heatwaves that impacted production, leading to stock depletion and rising local prices.
