A video clip released by an armed group in Nigeria showed hundreds of people being held captive, while local residents reported that about 600 individuals, mostly women, children, and the elderly, were kidnapped following an attack on worshippers at a mosque in Niger State, located in the north-central part of the country.
\nThe footage, circulated on social media platforms, depicted large groups of detainees seated on the ground in a forested area, surrounded by armed men, with the sounds of children crying and shouting audible.
\nThe video was released two days after gunmen attacked worshippers during their Friday prayers at the mosque in the village of Dekara, as part of simultaneous assaults targeting several population centers in the region.
\nThe Nigerian police had earlier confirmed the attack on the worshippers but noted their inability to verify the total number of kidnapped individuals, while local residents spoke of around 600 people being held.
\nIn the video, one of the gunmen is seen speaking in the Hausa language, calling on the families of the kidnapped to identify their relatives among the detainees. The scenes also depicted women accompanied by young children and infants, alongside several elderly individuals.
\nResidents of the area have called on federal and state authorities to intensify security efforts to secure the release of the kidnapped and to return them to their families.
